| @Frankster546 Actually, the 90% income tax was under Eisenhower. It was lowered to around 70% or so under LBJ. Sure, nobody paid that in full, but you can be damn sure the richest payed much more than 37%.
And the philosophical basis for progressive taxation comes from the fact that not everyone relies upon the services taxation provides equally. The rich relay on government services more (business owners need more than individual workers, and I'm not talking welfare), so they get taxed more.
